Maria Montessori with a student

"The greatest of the human personality begins at the hour of birth, so education must start from birth."

"The education of a very small child does not aim at preparing him for school but for life."

"Education is not something which a teacher does, but it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in human beings. The first thing a child’s education demands is the provision of an environment in which he can develop the powers given him by nature."

"The secret of good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination."

Teaching Staff

Lindsay Roland

Montessori teacher Lindsay Roland with student in MalawiHi my name is Lindsay Roland. I was born in the Bay area and raised in beautiful Newcastle. My parents have since settled in Auburn and I have a younger sister who lives in Sacramento. I graduated from Del Oro High School in Loomis and then attended Sacramento State. I spent a couple years there completing my General Education and exploring different career paths. During my time there I obtained a job at a local Montessori school as an assistant. I immediately fell in love with the materials and the philosophy. I decided to move to San Diego and attend the Montessori Teacher’s College of San Diego. I completed my training, internship and taught all at the Montessori School House in San Diego.

My path then led me back to Northern California where I was fortunate enough to meet Anne and even more fortunate when she invited me to join her staff. I spent an amazing three years at Sunrise Montessori. I had the pleasure of working with a wonderful and competent staff and meeting some amazing families. Then in the summer of 2008 I had the unique opportunity to go to Malawi, Africa, to help build a Montessori school. My trip was completely funded by support from the families of SMS! Families donated money, materials and attended fundraisers until I met my goal. I may have gone physically but I took the whole SMS family in spirit. The experience led me back to San Diego to explore a career in Social Work. I took many courses and became a Court Appointed Special Advocate. For the past 18 months I have been assigned to and have been working with two foster children. I have learned though that I best serve them in a volunteer capacity and that my true calling is as a teacher.

This past school year, 09/10, I taught Kindergarten in a first year public charter Montessori school. It was a growing experience to be part of something so new and it was remarkable to watch a community learn and put their trust into a new philosophy.

I now look forward to taking these experiences and settling down in Sacramento. I am very excited to be a part of the SMS family once again!

Miriam Dille

Sunrise Montessori Teacher Ms. MiriamI have had the privilege of working as an assistant teacher at Sunrise Montessori School for almost a year now.  This has been a dream come true because ever since I was a child I have known I wanted to become a teacher.  I began fulfilling this dream by graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Child Development from California State University, Sacramento in 2006.  My career with children began as a behavior therapist with children with Autism, but I found my true calling this past year while working at Sunrise Montessori School.  I instantly fell in love with Anne Binder and the Montessori Way, and have eagerly decided to pursue my teaching diploma as a Montessori Preschool/Kindergarten teacher from North American Montessori Center.  I will also be completing my last year in the Child Development Graduate Program at California State University next year.

I have an instinctive love for music and theater, and I enjoy biking along the American River.  I am so excited about the coming years with Sunrise Montessori School, and I am eager to learn and grow as a teacher for many years to come.

Kathy Frost

Sunrise Montessori Teacher Mrs. Kathy FrostHi!

My name is Kathleen Frost (Kathy).  I will be working with your little ones in the afternoon program at Sunrise Montessori School.  I am thrilled to continue working with your children.  I have been in and out of Sunrise Montessori for many years and have learned that this is the place for me.  This is my second year working with the afternoon programs.

I actually founded Sunrise Montessori and, although Mrs. Anne has owned it many more years than I have, I still hold a special spot in my heart for this lovely place Anne has continued to nurture.  Anne & I taught Natalie Gulbis (the golf pro) how to write her name!  After originally leaving Sunrise Montessori, I worked in the public school system with the younger “Preschool/Pre-K” students.  I have been fortunate to work with a variety of children from all cultures, backgrounds and abilities.  I love being back at Sunrise Montessori.  What a wonderful approach and school!

I have degrees in Child Development, Education, and I also obtained a Montessori Primary Diploma as well as an Early Childhood Teaching and Standard Elementary Teaching Credential.

I love my work and am looking forward to meeting you and your children.  I believe in a positive approach to discipline using re-directs as much as possible.  I believe in the uniqueness of every child and want to enhance the child as a whole by meeting their needs and allowing them to work to their potentials.  I aim to please and I work very hard as an individual.  I am looking forward to a chat with you and your child.

Personally, I collect dolls and am “President” of a doll club.  I enjoy gardening and love my home.  Recently, we have added a new member to our family.  Her name is Emiko Zoe and she is precious!  I have included a picture of her.  She is my nephew’s daughter.

Mary Rose

Montessori Teacher Ms. Mary RoseHello, my name is Ms. Mary Rose.  I am thrilled and honored to be a part of the staff and education found at Sunrise Montessori School.  Each child has a unique way of discovering the many aspects of the world around us.  It is my joy to help encourage and guide the children as they embark on their journey through our curriculum.  Four years of experience as a leader for a local children’s day camp, for children ages 3-8, has helped strengthen my passion for child development.  I am a senior at William Jessup University, and will graduate in December 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Through my education in the area of child development and psychology, the critical nature of a child’s early years of development has become a passion of mine. It brings great fulfillment to my life to watch a child develop the tools and education needed to build a strong foundation for a bright future.  It is my absolute pleasure to be a part of the thriving program found at Sunrise Montessori School.  In my free time I enjoy baking, spending time by the ocean, and visiting with family and friends.

Ms. Kelly

Sunrise Montessori Teacher Ms. KellyHello everyone, my name is Ms. Kelly.  I feel privileged to be working at Sunrise Montessori School with an exceptional team of educators and engaging curriculum.  Working with children brings much joy to my life and I love seeing their faces light up when they discover something new or when they have been working towards a goal and finally reach it.   As a coach at Tricks Gymnastics, I have five years experience working with children ages 10 months to 5 years.  Currently, I am a senior at California State University, Sacramento, working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development with a concentration in Social and Community Settings.  My scheduled graduation date is May 2011 and I plan to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher.  When I am not working, I spend time practicing karate, enjoy camping and hiking, and find opportunities to support and participate in community events.
