Maria Montessori with a student

"The greatest of the human personality begins at the hour of birth, so education must start from birth."

"The education of a very small child does not aim at preparing him for school but for life."

"Education is not something which a teacher does, but it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in human beings. The first thing a child’s education demands is the provision of an environment in which he can develop the powers given him by nature."

"The secret of good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination."

- Maria Montessori

Teaching Staff

Marian, Assistant Director

Ms. Marian works on garden crafts with a student at Sunrise Montessori School in RosevilleHello, my name is Marian and I have proudly been a teacher here at Sunrise Montessori for the past 14 years. I am originally from Sri Lanka and it was there that I discovered the Montessori philosophy. I was so inspired that I attended and received my certificate from the Marian Training Centre, Sri Lanka. I taught for 12 years before my husband and I decided to move our family to California. I was so fortunate to come across Sunrise Montessori and knew immediately that I had found a new home. My two sons were off to middle school but I was excited to enroll my daughter. Not only was it a privilege to become part of such a wonderful school but I was able to watch my daughter grow and thrive. I’m pleased to say she’s now off to high school, a very bright and confident young lady. I’m excited to continue my journey here at Sunrise and welcome the opportunity to work with your children. When I’m not here you’ll find me biking with my family or listening to country music.

Miriam, Co-Head Teacher

Roseville Montessori teacher Ms. Miriam with artwork from the studentsMy name is Miriam and I have had the privilege of working at Sunrise Montessori School for the past 7 years. In 2010 I completed my Montessori teacher's training and am now proudly serving as Co-Head Teacher in The Children's House with Miss Brittney. This has been a dream come true! I've always known my calling was to teach. I began fulfilling this dream in 2006 when I graduated from California State University Sacramento with a bachelor's degree in Child Development. I began my career as a behavior therapist working with children with Autism. It was a truly rewarding experience, but I found my true calling when I started here at Sunrise. I was immediately drawn to the Montessori philosophy and was quick to enroll at the North American Montessori Center. I now enjoy working with students and running the music and art programs. I have an instinctive love for music and theater and enjoy the outdoors. Recently my husband and I welcomed our first child, Isabella, and love the simple joy of watching her explore her new world and spending time together as a family.

Brittney, Co-Head Teacher

Sunrise Montessori Teacher Ms. BrittneyHello, My name is Brittney and I’m so happy to be a part of Sunrise Montessori as co-head teacher in The Children’s House with Mrs. Miriam. I started at SMS in 2015. While nannying and going to school to study Child Development, I fell in love with the Montessori philosophy. I started teaching at a Montessori school in Davis which inspired me to work towards my Montessori teaching Credential, which I recently completed. I have a true passion for children and feel I am extremely lucky to come to work to do what I love to do. I am from the Bay area, but fell in love with Sacramento’s central location to mountains and beaches. I love hiking, cooking, camping, yoga, and a good laugh. I recently became engaged and will be planning a wedding within the next year.

Sunrise Montessori Teacher Ms. BrieannaHello, I’m Brieanna and I started working for Sunrise Montessori in January of 2016 after I had just moved from Washington State to California for school at CSU Sacramento. Sunrise Montessori is my first job working inside my chosen career field and major. What an amazing blessing! Prior to moving to California, I worked for a restaurant management company in operations and marketing. As much as I loved my marketing position, it wasn't my true calling. I earned my AA in Education from Pierce College in Puyallup, WA. Then transferred to Sac State. It's been a privilege to work with all the children at SMS. When I am not at work with the children, I am either studying or spending time with close friends. Since I am new to California, I love exploring the area in my free time.

Rosville Montessori alumni and support teacher, EmmaHello! My name is Emma and I am a support teacher at Sunrise Montessori School.! I've been working at Sunrise for a year now. I am also a Sunrise Montessori Alumni. I attended preschool here when I was 3 years old and graduated from the kindergarten program in 2003. I absolutely love the Montessori philosophy. I currently attend Sierra College and am working on receiving my AS-T degree in Early Childhood Education with plans to transfer to Sacramento State University in the fall of 2017 to work on my Bachelor’s degree. This is my first time working in a preschool and I LOVE it. I have a lot of experience working with young children through my many years of babysitting. In my free time I love to spend time with my family and friends, paint, and do arts and crafts.

Sunrise Montessori teacher JonnaHi, my name is Jonna. This is my 3rd year working in child care. I'm currently majoring in Early Childhood Education at Sierra College. Working with children is my passion - watching them grow, learn and discover who they are is one of the best rewards there is. I'm so grateful and excited for this opportunity at Sunrise Montessori. I look forward to each and every day working here and helping children in their journey at SMS. When I'm not here I'm spending time with family and friends, at home relaxing or outdoors looking for new adventures.
